Nestled in the Chicago suburb of Carpentersville, Illinois, the Meadowdale International Raceway was more than just a track—it was a symbol of the golden age of American motorsports. Though its lifespan was brief, from 1958 to 1969, Meadowdale‘s impact on the racing community was profound. Today, thanks to the dedication of organizations like the Midwest Racing Preservation Association (MiRPA), the legacy of this historic track lives on.
The Birth of Meadowdale
Meadowdale International Raceway was the brainchild of Leonard Besinger, a local developer with a passion for motorsports. He envisioned a state-of-the-art facility that could host major racing events and put the Chicago area on the map in the racing world. In 1958, Besinger’s dream became a reality as Meadowdale opened its gates to the public.
The track itself was ambitious—a 3.27-mile road course featuring a challenging mix of sharp turns, elevation changes, and long straights. One of its most famous features was the Monza Wall, a steeply banked curve that tested the skill and bravery of even the most seasoned drivers. The track’s layout was designed to push the limits of both man and machine, making it a favorite among racers.
A Hub for Motorsports
During its heyday, Meadowdale hosted a variety of racing events, attracting top talent from across the country. The track was a regular stop for the United States Auto Club (USAC), which brought high-profile races such as the National Championship Trail. Legends of the sport, including Bobby Unser and Roger Penske, tested their mettle on Meadowdale’s challenging course.
In addition to open-wheel racing, Linda Daro, Executive Director of MiRPA, recalls, “Everything that raced in those days raced [at Meadowdale]. There were stock cars, drag racing, and sports car racing. They even raced snowmobiles and go-karts. It was a 3.2-mile road course.” . The track’s versatility made it a hub for motorsports in the Midwest, drawing crowds of enthusiastic fans eager to witness the high-speed action.
But despite its initial success, Meadowdale faced challenges. The track’s demanding layout, coupled with financial difficulties, led to declining attendance and eventually, the track’s closure in 1969. For years, Meadowdale’s legacy seemed destined to fade into obscurity.
Preserving the Past: The Birth of MiRPA
In 2008, on the 50th anniversary of Meadowdale’s opening, the local community organized a commemorative event. It was during this event that Linda Daro realized the rich history of Meadowdale was at risk of being forgotten. “I couldn’t believe that all these people who went on to be high level in their industry in the sport raced here, and I had never heard of it.
This revelation inspired Daro to take action, and the Meadowdale Raceway Preservation Association was born. The organization quickly grew, attracting members who shared a passion for preserving the history of Meadowdale and Midwest motorsports. Over time, the group expanded its focus, becoming the Midwest Racing Preservation Association (MiRPA).
MiRPA’s mission is clear: to promote and preserve the history of motorsports, the people, and the vehicles that made it all possible. “Part of our mission is to promote and preserve the history of motorsports, the people and the vehicles and so forth, and that there’s always a new generation coming up behind who have no clue,” says Daro. “The past history is really important, and we just don’t want that rich legacy to be lost.”
Keeping the Spirit Alive
One of MiRPA’s most beloved traditions is the annual Meadowdale, Motorsports & Memories Car Show, held on the old straightaway of the racetrack. This event draws hundreds of classic and vintage cars, as well as enthusiasts who gather to celebrate the history of Meadowdale and the broader Midwest racing scene.
In addition to the car show, MiRPA hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including monthly “Coffee and Cars” gatherings at Daro’s memorabilia shop in Cary, Illinois. These events offer a chance for car enthusiasts to come together, share stories, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with a shared love of motorsports. “It’s just a nice group of people with a common interest,” Daro says. “They’re all car people and a lot of them race vintage currently.”
Through these events, MiRPA not only preserves the history of Meadowdale but also fosters a sense of community among car enthusiasts. The organization serves as a bridge between the past and the present, ensuring that the legacy of Meadowdale and the Midwest’s rich racing history is passed down to future generations.
